Earthing: The Overlooked Electroceutical

Last summer, my friend Kim Kooyers sent me a link to The Earthing Institute, an organization espousing the idea that we receive a basic and profound health benefit by being in contact with the ground. I thought it made sense. It's true that we've been insulated from the earth's energy since switching to rubber footwear in the 1960s.

If anyone had told me then that a couple months of Earthing would diminish my 14-year-long headache, make me think clearer, increase my energy, and restore my sleep after 8 years of relentless insomnia, I would have been hugely skeptical. All these things have actually happened since I began Earthing. Aside from going gluten-free in 1999, nothing else has boosted my health so dramatically and rapidly.

However, I'm a data pervert and compulsive researcher, so I know I'm just an anecdote and would never write a blog post based only on my personal experience. My readers know me better than that!

I learned about some of the research supporting Earthing's health benefits when I and 999 other attendees at the David Wolfe Longevity Now Conference got Earthed in a hotel basement via conductive wrist bands. That was the first day my 14-year headache felt a bit better. Probably a placebo effect, I thought. That night, I slept with the earthing band around my foot in the K1 acupuncture spot. I slept better than normal, especially for being in a hotel.

I've since learned that Earthing may indeed be the "Most Important Health Discovery Ever" as suggested by the subtitle of Earthing, the ground-breaking book by Clint Ober and Stephen Sinatra MD. From reduced inflammation to pain reduction to better sleep to thyroid regulation to cortisol normalization to blood thinning, and more, earthing IS THAT POWERFUL. And, early studies support these and other health benefits.

I was so excited with my personal experience and impressed enough with the early research on the health benefits that I made a two-part video to share everything I've learned about earthing so far.

I hope you enjoy my two-part video series. It's already enjoying lots of action over at Natural News TV!

Yay! Please do report back. Would love to hear how you are both doing. It's not an instant fix... Clint Ober told me it takes 16 weeks to get the full effects, so hang in there!

Hi Alix!

I'm already an avid reader of your blog (and a huge supporter), and have been a subscriber through blogger for quite some time now, but I just subscribed through news feed as well. Now I'll be sure to never miss a med nauseam post!

I think the whole aspect of earthing is exciting, but what excites me even more is to hear about your experience with it. I truly hope that "earthing" picks up speed and that people are able to discover its potential. This is actually the fourth time that I've heard about earthing in the past two weeks, so I think that's a great sign!

It's funny how the universe works sometimes. Before walking out the door of one of my doctor's office's yesterday, my doctor ran after me with a sheet of paper in hand. He said, "I almost forgot! I think this could really help!". He proceeded to hand me a flyer about earthing, and the very products mentioned in your blog. Of course it peaked my interest in went straight to the top of my "Christmas Wish List" (a true wish list of a chronically sick girl, right?). Now today, I find that you're holding an earthing giveaway! That just made my morning.

Thank you for putting so much time and energy into sharing what you've discovered and what has helped along your journey to health. It's both educational and inspiring.

It's so great to hear from you. Getting to hear how this information I share - without any compensation - helps you and others is what keeps me going. How great that you've been getting the earthing message from so many contact points. I was so happy to finally meet you the other day, too. :-)

Great videos, Alix.

Earthing is a fascinating concept. I have always noticed how much better I feel throughout my body after a barefoot walk outdoors. Earthing research is in its infancy, but the book is a very interesting beginning. Click on the name "Darren" to see my review of "Earthing."

Thanks for sharing this info at Monday Mania, Alix! I fortunately live in a climate where I go barefoot almost all the time while at home so never really experienced otherwise. Now I know why the kids so prefer to play outside in bare feet and hate shoes!

That's great, Sarah, that you are always barefoot. Not true for me, before I knew the benefits. A lot of parents are finally easing up on their kids now that they know the benefits of going barefoot. We are all born with an intuition that can get bred out of us, huh?

Hi Alix,

I'm new to your blog, and just wanted to tell you I think your content is amazing, and that this topic is particularly fascinating. I've always felt so healthy whenever I return from a beach holiday, and I've always attributed that to getting lots of sun (I live in a very cold climate), and being away from all of life's stresses - but this makes me think there's something to all the barefoot walking too!!

Thanks, Shannon. I'm so glad you are enjoying the content here! I'm going to head over to your blog now.... :-)

This is amazing to me. This is the first time I have seen your blog, and how timely!

I moved to IL from NC and have progressively gotten worse and worse with fibromyalgia-like symptoms. We changed our diet in Feb when my daughter's NRT told us to go sugar and gluten-free and have had huge results with the entire family, but still I continue to have days where I can barely get out of bed.

We recently started investigating the possibility of LYME! We are still undergoing testing, but our LLMD is 99% sure that we do have it.

When I lived in rural NC I was barefoot pretty much year-round. Since moving to suburban IL, I am barefoot indoors, but usually wear shoes outdoors. This could be a big key for me (and my daughter) in healing, and I am really glad to have found you.

Any tiny piece of the puzzle like this in our journey to health is so worth it. There is, like you said, no risk to walking barefoot, and no cost. The price we may pay for NOT knowing and doing these things is huge, especially in cases like ours where there is chronic disease with real repercussions.

Again, thank you, thank you, thank you!!! If I could hug you, I would. I subscribed here and will be subscribing to your other blog as well. I'm hoping we'll be chosen as winners, and the indoor Earthing kit will get a LOT of use at my house!!!

I also hope you will drop by my (GF) blog and read my daughter's story.

Hey Alix, I loved your videos about earthing and I sell products that you can wear 24hrs a day that keep you grounded to the earth and repel all EMF's. The technology was 14 years in the making and we have the only machine in the world that can do it. I can also prove that it works by doing personal demonstrations as well as using a voltage meter. Plus our products can look like beautiful jewlery and come with lifetime warranties.. I don't know how else to contact you but through this blog, so if you are interested please contact me.

Hi Alix, we are a family with 3 generations of Lyme. My mom got it before she had me and now I have I three year old I passed it on to. We just discovered it was lyme.
Can you share with me how you changed your diet?
You look so healthy and vibrant and if diet has helped you achieve that, I want to try it too!
Thank you!!!

Hi Kristen,
I think I need to post about my diet since so many people ask me. In 1999, I took out gluten and 80% of my symptoms went away. But, the neuro stuff kept pushing forward no matter what I did with diet. I've since eliminated dairy, corn, soy as well. I haven't had a drink for more than ten years. I drink coffee a couple times a year cause I like the taste. I juice daily. I try to stay alkaline with the juicing, lots of avocados, and lots of greens. I try to be raw as much as possible. I detox like crazy with various methods including infrared sauna. I don't take pharma drugs unless it's a last resort. That's pretty much it. (Ha, that's all... if I could be looser with the diet and still have a productive life I would be looser, but I cannot loosen or I backslide.) I hope that helps. The Lyme Diet Book by McFadzean (if I remember correctly) looks really good. She seems to espouse some of the diet principles that have kept me out of bed. Thanks for writing. Please check back in and let us know how you are doing.

I am so grateful for having found this post on earthing.

As a professional counsellor I have seen all too many people not getting better on antidepressants and anti-anxiety medication.

Unsurprisingly, they are often worse off. Therefore I am handing them as many tools as possible for them to take control of their own well-being.

I have added a link to your post here:

Thank you again.
